Outreach Messages
Fill in the blanks and get a short, specific message you can send today.
Jump to the worksheet ↓You know who to talk to (if not, start with Twenty Influential People). Now send the message. Short and specific beats long and polished.
One person at a time is depth-first search
Given a role you want, search LinkedIn for who has that role or works at that company. Then send:
“Hi X! I saw you're a Y at Z, and that's one of my dream roles! Would love to learn what you love about it and how you got there. Particularly interested in W. Do you have 10 min to chat? Here's my scheduling link if easier.”
- Reconnecting? Lead with the catch-up, then say why they came to mind.
- Close friend? Skip the message. Bring it up over dinner or a workout.
- Always make it easy to say yes: a small ask (10 minutes) and a scheduling link.
Large groups are breadth-first search
Faster, thanks to six degrees of separation. Post in group chats, Discord and Slack servers, LinkedIn groups, alumni networks, or your niche's forum:
“I've been researching X and am curious about it -- know anyone who's an X?”
What to ask once you're talking
- What do you love about your role? What's hard about it?
- How did you get there? What would you do differently?
- What makes someone a standout candidate for this role?
- If you were me, what would you do in the next three months?
- Who else should I talk to? (This turns one chat into three.)
