For dream roles

  1. Identify up to three dream roles (look through job descriptions, or ask mentors).
  2. With those roles in mind, list 20 people who could help you gain clarity or move toward them.
  3. Rate each person 0–10 on closeness and 0–10 on expertise.
  4. Take the highest sums: reach out to those people first!
  • High closeness β†’ they'd want to help you.
  • High expertise β†’ it's easy for them to help, so they'd want to.

For any outcome (networking, referrals…)

Same steps, but rate closeness and influence. High influence means they can quickly make a difference -- so they'd want to help you.

Reaching out

One person at a time is depth-first search

Given a role you want, search LinkedIn for who has that role or works at that company. Then send a short, specific message:

β€œI saw you're a X at Y, and that's one of my dream roles! Would love to learn what you love about it and how you got there. Particularly interested in Z.”

Large groups are breadth-first search

Faster, thanks to six degrees of separation. Ask your wider circle:

β€œI've been researching X and am curious about it -- know anyone who's an X?”
